Iraq: Leave the U.S. A Way Out
|
|
The top U.S. general in Iraq and several other Bush administration
officials are briefing Congress this week on the U.S. military strategy.
But contrary to what these officials are saying, one year after the U.S.
"surge" of military troops into Iraq, the country is no closer to the
political, economic, and military accomodation that is needed to end
the killing. We at FCNL are urging Congress to reject the administration's failed war strategy in Iraq. Although Congress is not going to begin the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq this year, your representative can help leave the door open for a new U.S. policy in Iraq by building support for the Protect Our Troops and Constitution Act (H.R. 5626). This legislation would require the administration to consult Congress before entering into a long-term security agreement with Iraq and prevent any money going to establish permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq. Read more. Spread the word about plans for permanent bases in
Iraq with FCNL's flyer. ( |

In late April or early May, members of Congress will be asked to approve another $100 billion for the ongoing war and occupation of Iraq. Congress will not end the Iraq war this year. But if Congress doesn’t create conditions for a U.S. withdrawal now, the next president will not be able to end the war.
Here is FCNL's proposal for what you can do.
Read Lobbyist Jim Fine's memo on how to end the war.
Read FCNL's description of the type of bipartisan policy based on internal reconciliation in Iraq, regional negotiations with all of Iraq's neighbors, and U.S. commitment to a date certain for withdrawal that will be needed to get U.S. troops out of Iraq.
Congress approved another $70 billion in funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan just before Christmas (Find out how your senator voted). FCNL is urging Congress to stop voting more money for war and start calling for a new, bipartisan diplomatic and political strategy that will lead to the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Urge your representative to cosponsor The New Diplomatic Offensive for Iraq Act (H.R. 3797)

Force Congress to take action to end the occupation of Iraq & prevent a new war with Iran! Congress is getting ready to vote on Pres. Bush's request for an additional $120 billion for the occupation of Iraq. Details about the supplemental funding bill are not yet known -- but we know our demand: STOP FUNDING THE OCCUPATION. ALL FUNDS SHOULD BE LIMITED TO PAYING FOR THE SAFE WITHDRAWAL OF ALL US TROOPS AND CONTRACTORS. We don't know when Congress will debate and vote on the funding, so check back here, or sign up for UFPJ legislative alerts:
